Multiply by 11

For a 2-digit number, write the first digit, then the sum of both digits, then the last digit: 34 × 11 = 374. If the sum is 10 or more, carry 1: 68 × 11 = 748.

Square numbers ending in 5

Take the part before 5 (n), work out n × (n + 1) and write 25 after it: 35² → 3 × 4 = 12 → 1225.

Multiply by 5

Multiply by 10 and halve: 48 × 5 = 480 ÷ 2 = 240.

Multiply by 9

Multiply by 10 and subtract the number: 27 × 9 = 270 − 27 = 243.

Multiply by 25

Divide by 4 and multiply by 100: 36 × 25 = 9 × 100 = 900.

Numbers near 100

97 × 96: gaps from 100 are 3 and 4. 97 − 4 = 93, and 3 × 4 = 12, so the answer is 9312.

Add by rounding

298 + 457 = 300 + 457 − 2 = 755.

Quick percentages

10% = move the decimal one place; 5% = half of that. 15% of 360 = 36 + 18 = 54.

Multiply by 99

46 × 99 = 4600 − 46 = 4554.

Divide by 5

Double it and divide by 10: 235 ÷ 5 = 470 ÷ 10 = 47.

FAQ

Are these real Vedic maths sutras?

They are popular mental-maths shortcuts, several of which come from Vedic maths methods (like Ekadhikena Purvena for squares ending in 5 and Nikhilam for numbers near 100).

Can I use these tricks in exams?

Yes. They give the same correct answers as normal methods, only faster. Always check your answer if time allows.
